San Felipe…Biosphere
Reserve Rio Lagartos
San Felipe is a port located on the north coast of
the state of Yucatan in the Gulf of Mexico; their main
activity is fishing which has recently become a major
tourist activity.
San Felipe is located 11 kilometers west of Rio Lagartos,
at the entrance of the Ria Lagartos estuary, famous
for its pink flamingo populations. From San Felipe to
the port of El Cuyo, the creek runs parallel to the
coast of the Gulf of Mexico.
In the heart of San Felipe, most of the houses were
built from cedar wood and heavily varnished so they
could resist moisture and salt from the coast; however,
most of these buildings were destroyed by Hurricane
Gilbert in 1988.
Currently, San Felipe offers many services for ecotourism
and adventure, such as lodging, excursions by boat into
the estuary to observe birds, as well as beaches. The
opportunity to be in direct contact with nature and
contribute to the sustainability and conservation of
San Felipe is what always make the visit to San Felipe
a pleasant experience.
